Royal Gramma
(Gramma loreto)
Population status in the wild: Least Concern
The Royal Gramma is a small, colorful species of basslet fish native to the warm waters of the Western Atlantic, particularly around the Caribbean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the coastal waters of the Bahamas. Known for its striking coloration, the Royal Gramma has a vivid purple front half of its body that fades into a bright yellow tail, giving it a regal, eye-catching appearance. This fish typically grows to about 3 inches in length, making it a perfect choice for smaller marine aquariums.
Royal Grammas are carnivores, primarily feeding on small invertebrates, zooplankton, and tiny crustaceans in the wild. In captivity, they thrive on a varied diet, including high-quality frozen or live brine shrimp, mysis shrimp, and small pellets. They will also accept other meaty foods like frozen copepods and finely chopped seafood. Their natural behavior involves hunting for small prey in crevices and hiding spots, which can be mimicked in the aquarium with plenty of live rock and hiding spaces.
This species is known for its peaceful nature, making it a great choice for community tanks. Royal Grammas are typically shy and can be a bit territorial, especially when it comes to defending their home. They are often seen in caves or crevices, where they seek shelter and retreat to safety when they feel threatened. Despite their small size, they are often bold in defending their space and may chase away other fish that invade their territory, though they rarely cause harm. They are best housed with other peaceful fish that are not overly aggressive.
Royal Grammas are hardy and adaptable, making them an excellent choice for beginners in the marine aquarium hobby. They prefer stable water conditions, moderate water flow, and a temperature range of 72-78°F (22-26°C). They also do well in aquariums with a pH range of 8.1-8.4 and a salinity level between 1.020 and 1.025. With proper care, Royal Grammas can live for 5 to 7 years or more in captivity.
