Lemon Peel Angel

(Centropyge flavissima)
Population status in the wild: Least Concern

The Lemon Peel Angelfish is a small, vibrant species of angelfish found in the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Hawaiian Islands. This striking fish is known for its bright yellow body, accented by a dark blue or black marking around its eyes and dorsal fin. The Lemon Peel Angelfish typically grows to about 4 inches in length, making it a suitable species for medium to large reef aquariums.

Lemon Peel Angelfish are omnivores, with a diet consisting of algae, small invertebrates, and detritus. In the wild, they graze on algae growing on coral reefs, as well as feeding on sponges and other plant material. In captivity, they should be provided with a varied diet that includes high-quality algae-based foods, spirulina, and live or frozen foods such as brine shrimp and mysis shrimp to ensure proper nutrition.

This species is known for its relatively peaceful nature, though it can become territorial, especially when housed in smaller aquariums or with other angelfish. It is generally compatible with other peaceful species but should be kept with caution when paired with more aggressive tankmates or other angelfish. Lemon Peel Angelfish are best housed in a tank with plenty of live rock, which serves as both a grazing surface and a place for hiding.

Lemon Peel Angelfish are hardy, but they do require stable water conditions, including proper filtration, salinity, pH, and temperature. They thrive in well-established aquariums with plenty of swimming space and hiding spots. With proper care, these fish can live for 5 to 7 years or more in captivity, although they may live longer in ideal conditions. While their population is considered stable, they may be affected by habitat loss and overfishing in some areas.

Fun Facts:
The Lemon Peel Angelfish’s bright yellow coloration is one of its most notable features, making it a popular choice for aquarists looking to add a pop of color to their reef tanks.

Despite their small size, Lemon Peel Angelfish can be quite active and will appreciate a tank with plenty of hiding spots and space to swim.

The dark blue or black markings around their eyes and fins give the Lemon Peel Angelfish a distinctive appearance that sets it apart from other angelfish species.
