King Angelfish

(Holacanthus passer)
Population status in the wild: Least Concern

The King Angelfish is a stunning species of angelfish native to the warm waters of the Eastern Pacific, specifically around the Galápagos Islands, Costa Rica, and Panama. Known for its vibrant coloration and regal appearance, the King Angelfish has a striking blue body with yellow accents on its fins and tail, along with a distinctive "crown" of blue markings around its head. This fish can grow up to 12 inches in length, making it a relatively large angelfish species, well-suited for larger aquariums.

King Angelfish are primarily herbivores, feeding on algae, sponges, and other plant matter found on coral reefs. In their natural habitat, they are often seen grazing on algae growing on rocks and coral, as well as feeding on small invertebrates. In captivity, King Angelfish should be provided with a varied diet that includes high-quality algae-based foods, spirulina, and occasional live or frozen foods like brine shrimp or mysis shrimp to supplement their nutrition.

These fish are known for their active and territorial nature, particularly when it comes to defending their space in the aquarium. While they are generally peaceful toward other fish, they may become aggressive toward other angelfish or similarly shaped species. It’s recommended to keep King Angelfish in larger tanks, ideally 100 gallons or more, to give them plenty of space to swim and establish their territory. They should be housed with other peaceful species that won’t compete for food or space.

King Angelfish are relatively hardy but require stable water conditions, including proper salinity, pH, and temperature. They thrive in well-filtered aquariums with plenty of live rock for grazing and hiding spots. With proper care, King Angelfish can live for 10 years or more in captivity. While not considered endangered, their populations in the wild can be affected by habitat degradation and overfishing for the aquarium trade.

Fun Facts:
The King Angelfish’s vibrant blue and yellow coloration is thought to help it blend into the colorful, complex coral reef environments where it lives, while also serving as a warning to predators due to its sharp spines.

This species is highly prized among aquarium enthusiasts for its bold colors and regal appearance, often considered one of the most beautiful angelfish species.

King Angelfish are known for their intelligence and curiosity, often interacting with their environment and aquarium mates.
