Zebra Danios

(Danio Rerio)
Population status in the wild: Least concern

The Zebra Danio is a small, hardy species of freshwater fish native to the rivers and streams of South Asia, particularly in India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. It is one of the most popular aquarium fish due to its vibrant appearance, easy care requirements, and peaceful nature. Zebra Danios are easily recognizable by their characteristic horizontal blue and silver stripes, which give them the “zebra” look. These fish typically grow to about 1.5 to 2 inches (4 to 5 cm) in length, making them a great choice for smaller tanks or community aquariums.

Zebra Danios are omnivores, feeding on a variety of foods in their natural habitat, including small insects, zooplankton, and plant matter. In aquariums, they accept a variety of foods, such as high-quality flake food, pellets, and occasional live or frozen treats like brine shrimp or daphnia. Their active nature and constant swimming make them a lively addition to any tank, and they thrive when kept in groups of at least six or more individuals. This schooling behavior helps reduce stress and makes them more comfortable in community setups.

These fish are known for their resilience and adaptability, making them an ideal choice for beginner aquarium enthusiasts. Zebra Danios are hardy fish, able to tolerate a range of water conditions, including temperatures from 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C) and slightly acidic to neutral pH levels. They do best in well-planted tanks with plenty of swimming space, though they are not particularly demanding when it comes to specific habitat requirements. Their energetic nature can make them a bit of a challenge in aquariums with slower-moving or more timid fish, but they generally coexist well with other peaceful species.

Zebra Danios are also often used in scientific research due to their fast breeding, rapid development, and transparency during early stages, making them useful in genetic and developmental studies. In aquariums, they can breed easily, with females laying eggs that hatch within 24-48 hours.
