Golden Algae Eater
(Gyrinocheilus aymonieri)
Population Status in the Wild: Least Concern
The Golden Algae Eater, also known as the Chinese Algae Eater, is a species of freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, particularly in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia. They are commonly found in slow-moving rivers and streams with rocky or muddy bottoms, often dwelling in areas with dense vegetation. This species is known for its elongated, slender body, typically golden or yellowish in color, though younger fish may appear more transparent or light greenish. Golden Algae Eaters also feature a distinctive sucker-like mouth, which they use to attach themselves to surfaces, much like other members of the family Gyrinocheilidae.
Golden Algae Eaters are primarily herbivores, feeding on algae, plant matter, and detritus in their natural habitat. In aquariums, they are commonly kept for their ability to help control algae growth on tank surfaces. However, while they are effective at cleaning algae from glass, rocks, and decorations, they are also known to become less interested in algae as they mature, sometimes resorting to nibbling on the slime coating of other fish or plants. This change in behavior as they grow can make them less desirable in community tanks with other peaceful species, especially if they exhibit territorial behavior or aggression.
This species is an active swimmer, known for its energetic nature, and typically requires an aquarium with plenty of swimming space. They are best kept in groups of two or more, though they may become territorial, particularly as they mature, so careful consideration of tankmates is necessary. Golden Algae Eaters prefer aquariums with moderate to strong water flow and a temperature range of 72°F to 82°F (22°C to 28°C). They also thrive in water with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH and can adapt to a variety of water conditions, making them a hardy choice for both beginner and experienced aquarium keepers.
While Golden Algae Eaters are not typically bred in captivity, they are widely available in the aquarium trade and are often sold as a natural solution for algae control. However, due to their potential for aggressive behavior and dietary changes over time, they should be housed with compatible tankmates that can tolerate their temperament.
