The red abalone is a large species of marine mollusk native to the rocky coastlines of California and Baja California. Recognizable by its large, robust, and ear-shaped shell, the red abalone has a reddish-brown to purple color with beautiful iridescent inner surfaces. Adult red abalones can grow up to 12 inches in length, though most are smaller. The shells of these abalones have a distinctive series of holes along the edge, through which they expel water for movement and respiration.
Red abalones are herbivores and feed primarily on kelp, algae, and other types of marine plants. They use their muscular foot to cling tightly to rocks and other hard surfaces while they graze.
